Menlen Motorsports

2009 was a bitter sweet year for Menlen Motorsports. Although we slipped into a slump, we did gain a significant amount of information that can be carried over into next year. On the sweeter end of the spectrum, We would like to thank all of our sponsors;Brampton Brick, Arlington Brick & Supply , Select Real Estate, Bishop Performance , and Platinum Office Cleaning. Without your help and support it would have been impossible to get to the track. So once again we sincerely thank you and look forward to working with you in the near future. Speaking of the future, our 2010 planes are still in the works, but despite all rumors Menlen Motorsports WILL BE BACK AT THE TRACK in the spring. We will let you know more information when we know.

I would also like to send a special thanks to the pit crew; Randy, Jon, Dad, JB, Uncle Bernie, Roger and everyone else that made it possible for us to continue to participate in the sport we cherish.

Thank you for your support and have a Happy New Year,
Scott Menlen

An exciting week for Menlen Motorsports ended in bitter disappointment. After not being able to race for two months we were hoping to have a good finish in the annual Patriot 100 at the Auto City Speedway. Unfortunately , we only made it three quarters of a lap. Coming out of turn four, the car on the inside of us wiggled a bit. In result, we both ended up a half groove high then we would normally run. Since we were between the second on third groove we got into the marbles. Between the cold tires and marbles the car snapped around coming out of turn four. The right rear quarter panel clipped the wall spinning us down the track. With nowhere to go the 77 car launched off the front end of our car, ending our night.
It was nice to see Rob Michon and his family from Performance Images, and I would like to make a special thanks to the pit crew for all there help this week. Our next race will be Friday July 17th at the Dixie Motor Speedway, hope to see you there.

Last Tuesday Menlen Motorsports set off for Farmersburg Indiana for a very special event. June 23, 2009 marked the grand opening of Brampton Brick U.S.A. The brand new Brampton Brick U.S.A. plant has become the world’s most technologically advanced brick plant to date. It was an honor to be a part of this incredible event, and meet the remarkable Brampton team. Menlen Motorsports looks forward to possibly becoming a partner with the Brampton Brick Company.

As you may have noticed, Menlen Motorsports has not been on the track in a while. With the current economical status and lack of sponsorship, we are no longer able to race a full schedule. We hope to be back on the track soon. If you have any questions feel free to contact us buy phone at (586) 201–3820 or buy email at scottmenlen@yahoo.com. Once again we thank our current sponsor and you for your support. We hope to see you at the track soon.

Last Saturday night marked the season opener for Menlen Motorsports. With high hopes going into Saturdays Auto City Super Stock race, the results were rather disappointing. After two days of testing, we thought we had the car dialed in for Saturday’s big race. Unfortunately the track conditions on Saturday were much different then the previous two days. The car became extremely tight in the center (of the corner) and tight throughout the exit. In The heat race we started on the front row, but we would wind up finishing third. In an attempt to solve the handling issue we raised the pan-hard bar and increased the contact patch of the right front tire, but unfortunately we were not able to anticipate the changing track conditions well enough. We lined up 12th on the grid for the 40 lap season opener. Despite the mishandling car we were able to avoid all six wrecks and fight our way up to 8th. The team and I will regroup this weekend and prepare for our next event at the Auto City Speedway this Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Check out the updated schedule page for more information.

2008:

After a 2nd place finish in the USPRO race at the Dixie Motor Speedway, Menlen Motorsports had high hopes going into last weekends race at Auto City. Saturday was fall autograph night, following the traditional Australian Pursuit races. We Qualified 6th of the 17 cars entering the race, putting us 4th in the pursuit race, and 4th is where we finished. Shortly after that it started to rain, moving autographs and the remainder of the events to Sunday. It was nice to talk to some of the fans during the autograph session before getting ready for the 30-lap feature. We lined up 3rd in the feature which is were we would remain until the second lap. Coming out of turn 4 the #04 car got side ways and drove straight into us once again. The officials sent both of us to the rear. We would gain a few more positions by the end of the race. Once again we will be busy trying to get the car back to-gether and ready for the Team Tech 75 at the Springport Motor Speedway. Racing starts at 7:00 pm Saturday August 30th. I would like to thank every one who came out for autograph night and we hope to see you soon.

It was a packed house at the Dixie Motor Speedway last Friday night, for the Mid-Michigan Challenge. The ASA North and USPRO Late Models were on hand. We decided to run the 50 lap USPRO race. During our half hour of practice we adjusted the car to get it right for qualifying. Our first qualifying lap was slower than what we would have liked. Fortunately we picked it up on the second lap turning a 16.17, which was 7th fastest. We started on the pole thanks to the inversion and took the lead right off the start. We led for the first 10 laps before the caution flag came out for a single car spin on the back stretch. On the restart we got puched up the track coming out of turn two allowing the #72 car to slip by. On the next lap going into turn three we got another nudge turning us side ways, but fortunately we were able to save the car and hold on to the second spot. There was one other caution around lap 35, but in the end we were able to hold on for 2nd scoring our highest finish in what was our biggest race of the year. I would like to thank Johnny , Lynn and every one else who came to the track Friday. Menlen Motorsports now prepares to head back to Auto City Speedway this weekend. Before returning to the Delaware Speedway in London, Ontario for the APC 300, on August 30 and 31

It's going to be an other busy week for Menlen Motorsports. After a disappointing rain out Saturday, we are preparing for Fridays USPRO race at the Dixie Motor Speedway in Birch Run Michigan. But before we go to Dixie we're off to the Arlington Brick and Supply store in Shelby Twp. Located on 23 Mile Rd. just west of Old Van Dyke Rd. Monday the crew and I will be out there all day with the car, so come on out and stop by and check it out. Then on Friday night Menlen Motorsports will be at the Dixie Motor Speedway for the USPRO race, this should be an exiting show. We hope to see you there.

With only four Auto City races left it was crucial to have a good showing last Saturday night at the Auto City Speedway, but that didn't happen. Practice went pretty well for Menlen Motorsports, as we were just fine tuning the car for the race. We went out 4th for qualifying turning a 15.76, the same as three other cars, putting us 6h fastest. We finished where we started in the heat race, 5th. We lined up 4th on the grid for the 30 lap feature. Within the first couple of laps we dropped back to about 7th , due to handling problems. Then, what looked to be a bad night got worse as we got pushed off the outside of the track coming out of turn two. We sod surfed all the way down the back stretch grass until we hit the tire s. The car then went up on its left side before coming to an abrupt stop against the guard rail. That would be the end of our night. First off I'd like to thank Larry and Ed for the opportunity to be on the weekly radio show, Race Talk, last Wednesday night. I had the opportunity to talk about how we got to where we are today and our future plans. I would also like to thank the crew, as we're going to have a lot of work to do this week. Menlen Motorsports will make our next stop at the Auto City Speedway on August 9th before going to the Dixie Motor Speedway on August 15th for the USPRO race. For our complete schedule check out the schedule page.

After a disappointing rain out last week, Menlen Motorsports was glad to hit the track again. We struggled all throughout practice, qualifying 11th. The crew and I searched the car for problems causing a lack of horsepower. We determined it was a battery, so we replaced the battery and lined up for the heat race. We started 5th of the 6 car field and quickly jumped up to 3rd. It was a close battle for the second position. Going into turn three I moved up to the out side while the #12 went to the inside of the #75 car, making it three wide. We came out of turn 4 with the second spot in our hands. We then chased down the leader and made the pass down on the bottom of the track, pi cking up the lead with 2 laps to go. The #12 car was right on our back bumper, but fortunately we were able to hang on and pick up our 3rd heat race win of the year. For the second time this year we lead the field to the green flag. Unfortunately we dropped to 4th in the opening laps. There were 5 yellow flags, none of which helped us. The car was tight on the short runs allowing the top three cars to pull away, but after a few laps the tires would come in, allowing us to close in. We battled with the #65 car for most of the race, but in the end it was the #72 machine we were fighting with for third. It was a close race but we were just able to get an edge on them, finishing third. I would like to thank Arlington Brick and Supply along with Shaun Whitney and his crew for helping out this weekend. It was also nice to see all the drivers and crews from the Michigan Legends Series Saturday. Menlen Motorsports hopes to see you next Saturday night at the Auto City Speedway. Donʼt forget to check out the schedule page to see our complete 2008 schedule.

We were off to Auto City Speedway for the annual running of the Liparies Food Patriot 100. Practice went well for Menlen Motorsports, as we were fine tuning the car for the big race. During qualifying we encountered a problem, which we thought was in the carburetor. We started the heat race in the 4 position. We raced side by side with the #25 car for almost the entire race, battling for the 3rd spot. Fortunately we were able to come out on top(3rd). Back in the pits we realized we had a miss in the motor. The crew and I searched all throughout the car to find the problem. We thought we had fixed the problem for the 100 lap feature race, but unfortunately we did not. We still ran the feature, starting 11th in the 16 car field. It took us a few laps but we worked our way around the 10th place car and went to chase down the 9th place machine. It took us about 10 laps but we got there and worked our way around the #63 and #25 car to gain the 8th position. A caution flag came out at lap 47 putting us in the 7th position. We would continue falling back and forth for the 7-9th positions. As the laps were winding down we found our selfʼs battling with the #25 car again. A late race caution came out with just 7 laps to go. On the restart the #04 car climbed up on top of the hood, causing some damage, mostly cosmetic. We were able to continue and wound up 7th.I would like to thank John Turnbull Jr. and his crew, along with Robby Johnson for all their help. I would also like to thank Mike and the rest of Terry Bogusz' crew. A special thanks to Cheryl and Arlington Brick and Supply for the fuel.

After having a weekend off, Menlen Motorsports was anxious to get back to the track. The crew and I went up Friday night to watch an exciting night of racing at the Auto City Speedway. On Saturday it was our turn. The first set of hot laps (or practice) were skipped because of rain. The remaining two sessions went well for us. We qualified three tenths of a second off the fast qualifier, putting us about 7th quickest. We started the 8 lap heat race 5th of 5 cars. On the first lap we were able to get around the 4th place car, and the 3rd place car a couple laps later. We were running 3rd when the white flag came out; I made a quick move down to the inside and we came out of turn two, three wide. We got a good run down the back straight away putting me on the inside of the #15 machine. We were door to door coming through turns 3 and 4. Fortunately we were able to get a better run off of turn four, winning our second heat race of the season. Menlen Motorsports lined up 9th of 14 cars starting the 35 lap feature. The first caution came out on lap 1 when two cars got together and spun out right in front of us. The green flag was back out for about 25 laps while we slowly picked off cars one by one. Before the caution flew again, we were sitting in 6th on the restart. We were able to pick off two more cars on the inside of 3 and 4 putting us 4th, which is where we would stay for the remainder of the race.I would like to thank Mike and Burt McColl from McColl Racing Enterprises for all their help this week. Also, I would like to thank Joe Dewitt, Rick McColl and the rest of the crew for all their help this week. Menlen Motorsports next race is one you donʼt want to miss, the Lipari Patriot 100 Feature Race at the Auto City Speedway, June 28th. Hope to see you there.

Thank you race fans for coming out Saturday night (5-31-08), for Auto City Speedways spring autograph night. There was a great turn out of fans and cars for Saturday nights show.
Since Delaware Speedways race on Friday was rained out it gave us more time to get the car ready for Auto City. We once again struggled through the first half of practice but we were able to dial it in for qualifying. We ended up.)
qualifying 8th of the 15 cars, lining us up in the 2nd position in the 2nd heat race. This is where we remained until lap 4 when the #65 car got around us. It was a real close finish, with the top 3 cars finishing just a car length or two away from each other, we finished 3rdIt was then time to hit the track, but not for the feature, it was for autograph night. The session couldn't have turned out better as Rusty (the flag man) and I along signed autographs for over an hour. It was an honor to meet all the fans and I would like to thank every one who signed the car
We started on the poll in the 35 lap feature race, but we got shuffled back to 7th in the opening laps. We would fight our way around the #72 car for 6th. Which is were we stayed until lap 33, when a late race caution (3rd of 3 yellow flags) came out that put the #65 car right on our rear bumper. With two laps to go he snuck up on the out side and... got us at the line by a fender, putting us in the 7th position as our finishing result.
It was nice to see Tom, George Dave DeHem and Jeff M. Saturday night. I would like to thank Rusty for signing autographs with us, and I would also like to thank the crew for all their hard work this week. A special thanks to all the race fans who came out Saturday night. Menlen Motorsports next stop is Saturday June 7th at the Auto City Speedway, I hope to see you there.

It was back to Delaware Speedway in London Ontario last Friday nigh (5/23/08). We struggled all through practice and thought we finally had the car right for the heat race. Unfortunately we will never know, for we didn't even make it pass the first corner of the heat race. We got a little loose off the start allowing the 4th place car to try and squeeze in between me and the 3rd place car. But it did not work sending myself and the #7 car into the turn 1 wall, (For crash video click HERE and scroll to the mid way point of the clip). The crew and I work vigorously to get the car out to make a couple laps in the feature so we could collect last place points. We were indeed able to do that and from there it was off to McColl Racing Enterprises to repair the car for Saturdays Memorial Day special at the Auto City Speedway. The crew worked all through the night getting 0 hours of sleep and had the car ready at 11:00 Saturday morning.
From there we traveled back to the states and up to Clio Michigan ready to race. We ended up setting the fastest time we have set in qualifying, lining us up 6th in the 10 lap heat race. Only 1 caution flag flew which was for a blown motor in turn 2. We started 13th in the 14 car feature and after avoiding a couple wrecks and gaining a couple of positions we found ourselfs sitting in 7th. We would remain there until the final lap when the #72 car blew a motor on the last lap putting us in 6th.
I would like to thank every one who came out this weekend and a special thanks to Mike and Louie McColl for all their help Friday Night. Our next stop is Saturday May 31st at the Auto City Speedway in Clio Michigan for AUTOGRAPH NIGHT. I hope to see you there.

After 3 rained out races Menlen Motorsports was back in business. We kicked off the weekend at the Delaware Speedway in London Ontario. We set off early for testing to get a feel for the track being this was the first time I was racing on this challenging speedway. After getting some laps in it was time to race. We lined up near the back of the 14 car heat race, because I am a rookie. Though we got a good start, the car on the out side row came down sending us for a first lap spin. After avoiding several more incidents we made it up to the 5th spot before getting turned around going in turn three coming down to the white flag.
In the 35 lap feature race we lined up 19th on the grid of the 23 car field. Once again we got turned around on the first lap, this time in turn three. The 35 lap feature was full of excitement of all kinds, as only 11 cars of the 23 starters finished. Though we went on a carnival ride up the Delaware Speedway turn four wall, but we managed to survive the hour long feature finishing 11th.
We were back to work early Saturday at the home of Menlen Motorsports in Macomb Twp. MI. The crew and I worked vigorously through out the morning to repair the car for Saturday nights race at the Auto City Speedway. Unfortunately we were a little late, missing some of our practice time at the trick track. We were still fine tuning our set up for the evenings festivities and struggled all night to get it right. We started on the pole for the 8 lap heat race. We got a good start and held off the rest of the field for our first heat race win in the Auto City Super Stock Late Model.
Since I am a rookie we had to start at the rear of the field. We struggled through out... the feature to get the car right, but even making a pit stop wasn't enough. A near miss of a couple of spinning cars kept us in the race finishing 11th.
It was good to see every one from the Michigan Auto Racing Fan Club Saturday, and I hope you guys enjoyed the show. Also I would like to thank the crew for all there hard work this week. It was nice to see Chris Saturday and I hope all of you will come next weekend as Menlen Motorsports prepares for another double header at the Delaware Speedway Friday, and Auto City on Saturday.

It was back to Saturday racing on Saturday April 19th , Menlen Motorsports made their inaugural race with the new Late Model in the Auto City Super Stock class, at the Auto City Speedway in Flint MI. Practice went well for us as we qualified 9th of 12 cars. I started 2nd in the heat race but getting a poor start put me back to 3rd on the first lap. We would race single file for the remaining 7 laps, resulting in a 3rd place finish for Menlen Motorsports. As the sun set, the speedway began to glow, and the aroma of Torco race fuel filled the air as the commands were given to "start your engines", and get the 2008 racing season under way. We lined up 10th on the grid, because I am a rookie, therefore we have to start at the back of the back for the first three races. The first caution flag fell on the first lap as a couple of cars got to gather on the back straight away. It was a near miss for us but we just made it through the wreckage. We had a short green flag run before the second and last caution flew over the speedway, this time it was for a single car spin in turn 1. Unfortunately we were collected in the mess to avoid the spin, but the damage was minimal and we were able to continue on to a 7th place finish, collecting 5 bonus points for the hard charger award.
I would like to thank Joe DeWitt and the rest of the Auto City Staff on the spectacular facility they have created over the off season. I would also like to thank every one who came out to the track Saturday.
On April 20th Menlen Motorsports attended the monthly Michigan Auto Racing Fan Club meeting in Chesterfield MI., at the Lionel Train Co. I appreciated the opportunity to speak and we can't wait for the club to stop at the Auto City Speedway on May 17th.

On March 1st Menlen Motorsports crossed the boarder for the first time of 2008. We set off for London Ontario Canada, home base for McColl Racing Enterprises There we set the car up on their new surface plate in the shop. Getting it ready for our spring test later in March. I would like to thank Jen and Mike for their hospitality.

On February 19th Menlen Motorsports flew to the New Smyrna Speedway in New Smyrna Beach Florida. There we attended the Finish Line Racing School, on Wednesday there was an hour and a half of class room time before we went to the speedway. At the track we did a ride along with the instructor before we took the wheel of our rental car. After the lunch break we got out in the late model. Thatʼs were we spent the rest of our time as the instructors guided us from the infield. I would like to thank Dad and Cheryl for the Opportunity, as race season is just around the coner.

Back at the shop we are putting the finishing touches on the pit box and preparing the car for the 2008 race season. In 2008 Menlen Motorsports is moving up to a template body late model. We will be racing at two home tracks, the Delaware Speedway in London Ontario Canada on Friday nights and at the Auto City Speedway in Flint Michigan on Saturday nights. Along with our two home tracks we will also be racing in a couple of Super Pro and ASA events as well. For the complete 2008 schedule check out the schedule page of the site.

As we enter a new year, Menlen Motorsports is entering a new series. In 2008 we will be moving up to a template body late model car (can be seen in the photo gallery). We plan to start racing in April at the Auto City Speedway on Saturday nights, along with racing at the Delaware Speedway on Friday nights. Before we do that I plan to attend the Finish Line Racing School in Dayton Beach Florida in February.
Currently we are preparing the war wagon for battle (or a big tool box) and getting the car ready to race in the spring.

On November 16th we took our final trip of the 2007 season, to Sparta Kentucky for the KOIL Tour Awards Banquet. We had a great time at the Belltara Casino and Resort and it was nice to see every one again and it was an honor to receive the Sportsmen of the Year Award.

I would like to thank every one who came out Saturday and a special thanks to Karen Krassa for every thing she has done for us this year. Menlen Motorsports next stop is the KOIL Tour Awards Banquet at the Belterra Casino and Resort next Saturday.

On Saturday October 20th we set off for our home track, the Auto City Speedway. There we spent a few hours testing the new ASA Late Model. For the most part we did well and I can't wait for spring. I would like to thank Pat and Roger along with every one else who came and a special thanks to Joe DeWitt.

A successful season came to a close last Saturday night at the Auto City Speedway. In the heat race I started on the poll and battled side by side with the 92 car for the first couple laps, before taking the lead. I continued to lead the rest of the race and picked up the heat race win. I started 7th in the 30 lap feature and going into the first turn on the first lap I got together with he 5th place car and spun out. Therefore, we had a complete restart. After a 5 lap side by side battle with a couple of cars I worked my way up to 5th and that is where I finished. Unfortunately it was not enough to clinch the overall championship but we were able to win the Semi-Pro championship for the state of Michigan.
It was nice to see Rusty and Larry again, and we had a great time after the race. Also I would like to thank Johnny and Lynn for coming. So as this year has come to an end I would like to thank my Dad especially for all that he has done this season. Also Cheryl, JB, Granny, Rick, John, Jeff, Randy and AJ for all their help. I'd also like to thank everyone else who has supported me this year and thanks Mikie, Jalyn and Amy for coming.
Stay tuned for updates every couple weeks. As we will be letting you know of all the changes and plans for the coming season.

race and jumped to the lead on the first lap. I would hold on for all 8 laps to win the heat race. I started 6th in the feature and fell to 7th early, but I fought my way back up to 5th and with 2 laps to go I got spun out coming out of turn 4. Fortunately I looped it all the way around and never stopped and only fell back to 8th. After all was said and done I came home 7th.
As the 2007 racing season nears its end, we'll make our final trip to Sparta Kentucky this weekend at the Kentucky Speedway for the 2007 Young Lions Nationals.
I would like to thank AJ for helping this week and congratulations to Aunt Jen and Bob.
Also check out the new photos in the Photo Gallery.

Last weekend we were off to the Kil-Kare Speedway on Friday and Angola Indiana on Saturday. On Friday I finished second in the heat race and 6th in the feature after starting 4th.
On Saturday we went to the Angola Speedway. It was my first time at the track and only the second for the Michigan Legend Series. In practice we were fighting a tight condition that only got slightly better as the night went on. In the heat race I started second and finished second. I started on the poll for the feature and lost the lead on the first lap. I got the lead back eventually and would hold it until 11 laps to go. After all the restarts (3 of them were within 2 laps to go) I would end up finishing second.
Our next stop, the Indianapolis Speedrome. I would like to thank Aunt Sandie and Uncle Bernie for their help this weekend.

Last Sunday we set course for the Dixie Motor Speedway. During practice we did some fine tuning and the car was ready to go for the heat race. In the heat race I got the lead on lap 2 and was able to hold off the #24 car to the finish. Immediately after the heat race we were called up for the feature, giving us no time to check over the car. I started ninth and some how made my way up to 6th. When I returned to the pit area we looked under the hood and discovered I was running on 3 cylinders for the entire feature.
I would like to thank AJ for all his help this week and it was also nice to see Pat and Roger. Our next stop is Friday at the Kil-Kare Speedway and Saturday in Angola Indiana at the Angola Speedway.

Over the weekend we had another double-header. On Friday we went to the Spartan Speedway. Practice went fairly well but we still had to make some minor adjustments for the heat race. In the heat race I started in the middle of the pack and got up to second in the opening laps. With 5 laps to go I got around the #54 after 2 laps of battling and I would continue to lead up to the checkered flag. I started 4th in the feature and fell to 5th off the start. I worked my way up to 3rd with 5 laps to go when the 2nd place car spun out. I would not be able to get around the leader and would come home second… Although we never came home, we set off to the Auto City Speedway in Clio MI. Auto City is one of my favorite tracks and one I've been going to since I was 5 years old. The car was good all through out the night only making minor adjustments to accommodate for the changing track conditions. I started the heat race 5th and got up to third on the second lap. After several caution flags I was able to get up to second and finish just behind the #38. In the feature I started 4th and got the lead on lap 2 and lead all the way.
Our next stop is the Dixie Motor Speedway this Sunday

Last weekend we began our double header on Friday at Toledo Speedway. Toledo was the first track I raced my legends car on (last year). In the heat race I started 3rd and was able to get up to second right off the start and would stay there for the rest of the race. In the feature I started on the pole. There were 2 caution flags in the first lap, fortunately I was not part of them. On the restart I was able to hold off the #17 for half the race before he snuck around us. I would end up finishing 3rd.
Saturday we went to Owendale Speedway for the second dirt race of the year. I finished 3rd in the heat race and 9th in the feature.
We would like to thank Randy and Randy2 for letting me drive the #25 car on Saturday and AJ for his help this week. It was also good to see Larry and Tina at Toledo Friday. Our next stop is Friday at the Spartan Speedway and Saturday at the Auto City Speedway in Clio.

On Friday the 13th we went to the M-40 Speedway (in Jones MI.) for our second National Qualifier. This meant the winner would get a spot in LasVegas for the final national race. After the first practice session we changed the gears in both cars, and the second session went a lot better. In the heat race I started 3rd and right off the start I went to the bottom making it three wide and came out of the turn as the leader but the yellow flag flew for a four car wreck. On the restart I took the lead coming out of turn 2 and I would continue to lead the remainder of the race. I started 5th in the feature and got up to second within the first 5 laps. I battled the #28 and took the lead in lap 19. I would lead until three laps to go when lap traffic got together with us sending me off the track on the hook.
Our next stop is a double header, Toledo Speedway on Friday and back to the dirt on Saturday, Owendale Speedway.

Last weekend we went down to Kentucky for the 5th weekend this year. On Saturday it was the Summer Nationals, therefore they put all the classes of cars together. Forty one cars showed up but only 24 made the field. In the Heat race I started 3rd and got up to 2nd right off the start. On lap 6 of 8 I was passed and fell to 3rd. I started the feature 11th and worked my way to 10th were I would stay for the 40 lap feature.
On Sunday we were back in our 3 classes; Semi-Pro, Pro and Masters. I qualified 11th out of all the cars which put me 6th in my class. I made my way to 5th early in the 20 lap race then later I got up to 3rd. We had a green, white, checkered finish and I was able to hold on to 3rd.

Last weekend was a dirty one. We went to Crystal Motor Speedway for our first dirt race of the season. This was the 3rd time I have driven on dirt. In the heat race I was battling with the #54 car before almost spinning out in turn four. In the feature I almost fell to the rear before coming back to finish 9th and Rick finished 11th.
We would like to thank Randy Gallagher and Randy 2 for letting me drive the #25. Our next stop is in two weeks for the Summer Nationals, under the lights at the Kentucky Speedway.

Over the past weekend we had a double header at Dixie then the Rock. Before that, on Wednesday we went to Dixie Motor Speedway to heat cycle legends tires and practice the ASA car for the first time. Practice went well in both cars and we set off for Race Talk with Larry Loynes and Ed Inloes.
On Thursday we did the maintenance on the cars and loaded them back up for Friday.
Friday the car reacted much like it did on Wednesday, Slippery. We started the heat race 5th, and took the lead from the #17 car early and won the race. I started on the pole in the feature and got a great start. With about 5 laps to go I got caught in traffic allowing Levi Roster to slip by on the out side. I would end up scoring my fifth 2nd place finish of the year in the caution free 30-lap feature. Rick had a great run as well finishing 3rd in the heat race and 8th in the feature both days (8th).
On Saturday we set off for the Rock, Flat Rock Speedway. The first time we were there the race was shortened 10 laps; fortunately we went all 30 this time. In practice we set fast time and would follow that up by winning the heat race. I started 9th in the feature and after 19 laps I snuck my way around the #17 and #21 car for the lead. I was able to hold on from there and take my first career legends feature win. 200""
Fortunately all 3 drivers that blew up this weekend were ok. I would like to thank John for coming this weekend. Also we would like to thank Larry and Ed for letting us on the show Wednesday. It was good to see the other Larry's, Larry Giese and his dad at Dixie. Our next race is Saturday on the dirt at Crystal Motor Speedway, we hope to see you there, but if you can’t, you can listen live at Crystal Motor Speedway. com. Thanks every one that came out to the races this weekend and Happy Fathers Day.

Buses Bring 'Em In At Flat Rock
FLAT ROCK MI (6-16-07)--A packed house enjoyed the Marco's Pizza School Bus Figure 8 races Saturday evening at Flat Rock Speedway. The wild event saw Jeff Kurzyniec come home the winner, with 15 year-old sensation Scott Menlen victorious in the Michigan Legends event and Dennis Randall the winner of the ARCA A-1 Auto Parts Factory Stock feature race. It was quite evident from the drop of the green flag that this School Bus Figure 8 race would also become a Demolition Derby. Before the 8 bus field got to the first turn, 2 hard side-to-side hits occurred, setting the stage for the remainder of the contest. Through it all Jeff Kurzyniec grabbed the win as he blasted his air horn on his bus, much to the delight of the crowd. Billy Earley wound up second and was the instigator in several hard shots at the intersection. Dennis Whisman's ride took a hard enough shot, or shall we say hit someone hard enough that the engine was getting ready to fall out, just like his transmission did! Ray Gaddis, Danny Gaddis, Kevin Rapley, Sam Hall and Jack Franzil filled out the field. The father-son Gaddis duo took the heat wins. Suburban Oil, The Orchards, George's Used Cars, PJ's Trucking, Rod's Overhead Door, Sportway and Marco's Pizza served as sponsors for the buses. The next bus race is slated for Saturday, September 8. A new fan favorite was created when youngster Scott Menlen exited his Legends Car in the Greater Detroit Auto Auction Winners' Circle Saturday. Scott captured the 30 lap feature after grabbing the lead on lap 13 on his way to his first-ever feature victory. He thanked the crowd, his parents and crew and was thrilled "to win my first race here at Flat Rock, where I've been watching races since I was 3 years old and I started racing here in the go-karts." Ben Rouster was the early race leader and got caught up in lapped traffic as Menlen zipped by for the lead on his way to victory. The race was stopped on lap 19 when then 2nd place man Ryan Meldrum caught fire. He was fine but his night was finished. Menlen took off on the re-start and sailed to the win over Frank Jiovani, Rouster, Levi Rouster, Rick Kilbourn, Jerry Warden, Randy Gallagher Sr., Rick McCall, Chance Rice and Randy Gallagher Jr. Menlen, Jiovani and Meldrum took the heat race wins. Dennis Randall emerged from a great side by side battle for Rick Cousino for 8 laps, finally getting to the front and the lead on lap 18 and went on to win the 25 lap Factory Stock main event. Cousino chose the low line all night and Randall went high as the duo put on a great show. At the stripe, Randall topped Cousino, Brian Ringger, Cory McCaughey, Eric Huston, Landon Schuster, Tim Shine, Scot Bunge, Kevin Rapley and Anthony Terris for the win. Houston posted the fast time for the 21 cars on hand at 14:308. The 4 car dash went to Matt Ringger. Heat race winners were Randall and Cousino, with Randall also making it a hat trick by winning the pursuit race. The Atomic Powersports/Moran Chevrolet 100 for the ARCA Moran Chevrolet/Miller Lite Late Models is up next Saturday, June 23 at Flat Rock Speedway. A field of 25-30 cars is expected for the 100 lap event, featuring all-green flag racing. The ARCA Casite Figure 8's and the Jaimes Industries Street Stocks will also be in action. The pits open at 1:30, practice begins at 3, (the front gate also opens at 3), time trials are set for 5 and racing begins at 7 p.m.

The Auto Value/Bumper to Bumper Michigan Legends Series made it two nights of back to back racing excitement this past weekend with a wiley veteran grabbing the checkers at Dixie and a young, up and coming driver grabbing his first feature win the next night at Flat Rock.

The series started out on Friday night at the Dixie Motor Speedway with three heat races being run. Randy Gallagher Sr. took the first heat over a closing Rick Kilbourn and Jerry Warden. Heat race #2 saw Levi Rouster take the win over Rookie of the Year contender, Chance Rice and Rick McColl. Heat race saw Scott Menlen grab the checkers over a Ben Rouster and Ryan Meldrum.

The 30 lap feature race would go from green to checkers without a caution flag. Scott Menlen in the Menlen Motorsports #86 would lead from the drop of the green flag with some early pressure from Randy Gallagher Sr. in the #24 machine. Menlen lead lap after lap while eventual winner Levi Rouster in the Tools for Trades #28 was working his way up from his mid pack starting position. While Rouster was moving up towards the front of the field, the wad of Rick Kilbourn in the #54, Ben Rouster in the #21, Ryan Meldrum in the #17, and Frank Jiovani in the #23 were having a spirited battle for the fourth though seventh spots and giving Gallagher fits as they would catch him then he would pull away a bit as the group battled each other.

Eventually, Levi Rouster caught Menlen in lapped traffic and after a couple of laps was able to get around Menlen on lap 25 and hold on for the win. Gallagher held on for third with Kilbourn, Ben Rouster, Ryan Meldrum, and Frank Jiovani taking 4th through 7th.

Jerry Warden in the #22, Rick McColl in the # 186 and Chris Brunet in the #36 rounded out the top ten

Saturday night saw the series move to the high banks of the Flat Rock Speedway and young Scott Menlen was looking to gain some redemption for the night before and was not about to finish second to anybody, no matter how good they were or how much experience they had.

Menlen took the first heat over Rick Kilbourn and leading Rookie, Chance Rice in the Catt development #38. Frank Jiovani took the second heat over Butch Polson in the #03 Polson Racing machine and Matt Todd in the #8 machine. The third heat saw Ryan Meldrum grab the checkers over Randy Gallagher Sr. and Ben Rouster.

With Ben Rouster leading the race Menlen was busy getting up to the front to challenge for the lead. Menlen was not going to be denied this night as he was on a mission to catch Rouster and try to get the lead. Menlen finally caught Rouster in lapped traffic and was able to gain the lead from Ben Rouster just as brother Levi had done the night before. Menlen was able to hold on and take his first ever Legends Car feature win over the machine of Frank Jiovani. Ben Rouster held on for third while Levi Rouster and Rick Kilbourn in the Fourth Street Auto machine rounded out the top five. Sixth through tenth were Jerry Warden in the #22, Randy Gallagher Sr., Rick McColl, Chance Rice, and Randy Gallagher Jr.

The win was especially sweet for the entire Menlen family as it made for a great Father’s Day gift from Scott to both his Dad Jeff and his Grandpa who are always there at the track supporting him and keeping him going.

The Auto Value/bumper to Bumper Michigan legends Series has now completed three feature races this season with three different winners. Frank Jiovani took the honors at Flat Rock back in May and now Levi Rouster and Scott Menlen have taken the two features this past weekend at Dixie and Flat Rock. There is a great Rookie of the Year battle brewing with Chance Rice, Matt Todd, Chris Porco, Tony Monge, and Dr. Kent Semlow.

The series moves to the Crystal Motor Speedway this coming Saturday, June 23rd for its first of two shows on the dirt this season with the second show on July 21st at the Owendale Speedway. So come on out to Crystal and take in some great dirt racing action this weekend, you’ll be glad you did. For more information on the Michigan Legends Series go to www.michiganlegends.com and we’ll see you at the races.

It was good seeing Mt. Cleamons Mike, Doug, Monroe Lou, and a special hello to the Menlen gang. Speaking of Scott Menlen, what a week he had. Last week he ran Indianapolis Speedrome on Friday and finished 3rd in the feature, then on Saturday he finished 6th at Anderson Speedway, on Wednesday he was featured on Larry Loynes race talk show, and also on Wednesday he tested the ASA Latemodel for the 1st time at Dixie and practiced with Steve Sauve and Jack Varney Jr., then on Friday at Dixie he started on the 2nd row in the heat and won the heat race, started on the front row of the feature and led the first 15 laps, but got caught up in lap traffic and was passed by Levi Rouster and finished 2nd. I have seen great improvement by young Scott Menlen as the Menlen Racing Team has traveled all over the Midwest and South. I always say the best way to improve is to get out and travel, test new waters, don’t stay at the same track and here’s a perfect example as Scott gets ready to take it to a new level with the ASA Latemodel. Again they are looking for sponsorship, go to ScottMenlen.com for anyone interested, you won’t find a better bunch of people from Jeff, JB (aka Pappy), and Racing Rick McColl. Again it was great seeing everyone from the Menlen gang including the newest member Cheryl. Thanks again guys for the adult beverages after the races and I’ll see you at Auto City on July 3rd.

Last weekend we set off to Indiana for the second time this year. Our first stop was the Indianapolis Speedrome. We arrived just in time for qualifying. I was able to qualify 5th which put me in 4th for the heat race. After falling to 6th I was able to make my way back up to 3rd. In the feature we started 3rd and would finish there in the 35-lap race. Day two lead us to Anderson, the “worlds fastest quarter mile oval”. Rick was back in action on Saturday (after missing Friday) and we both qualified mid pack. I started six in the heat race finishing 5th while Rick started 8th finishing 7th. I started 8th in the feature and stayed there until lap 10 when Andersons 2003 champion blew up right in front of me. I was able to make my way to 6th, and that was were I remained for the rest of the race putting me first in Semi Pro both days. Rick mean while had a great battle with the 46 car coming home 13th.
We would like to thank John for helping out this weekend. Also on Wednesday we are going to test the new ASA car for the first time. Our next race is another double-header, Friday at Dixie Motor Speedway and Saturday at Flat Rock; hope to see you there.

Last weekend we went back to the Kentucky Speedway for our fourth time this year. Saturday was the Koil Tours 3rd annual Humpy Hundred. The heat was not only messing with the drivers, but the cars as well. We got it fixed in practice and qualified 2nd. I fell back to third early and patently waited until 25 laps to go. I made my way to 2nd and would remain there for the rest of the race. On Sunday I started the heat race in 2nd and had a good battle with the 37 car, beating him by just a car length or two. We started on the pole for the 25-lap feature. I got shuffled back to 3rd early and I would make my way back to 2nd, which is where I would finish again. Rick finished 3rd in his class on Saturday, but blew up on Sunday. We would like to thank Byron Stowe for letting us use his back up car.
Our next race is Friday at the Indianapolis Speedrome and Saturday at Anderson Speedway.

Kalamazoo was rained out, but I had a great time camping and we can't wait for Saturdays Humphy Hundred at the Kentucky Speedway.

Friday afternoon we went off to Xenia Ohio. We arrived at the Kil-Kare Speedway right on time. In the first practice Rick and I found ourselves almost kissing the wall a couple of times. It took me awhile to get used to the track, but I found a good line and qualified 10th. I started on the pole of the 3rd heat race. I got the lead early and pulled away to the heat win. I started the feature 9th. I got around a couple cars right off the bat. No caution flags created a lot of lap traffic. My self and the #65 had a hard clean battle to the finish line on the last lap were I came across just in front, finishing 7th.
Jake and Zack Dunsmore did well also and I'd like to thank Cheryl for coming too. Our next race is Saturday at the Zoo (Kalamazoo Speedway)

What a weekend at the Rock. This weekend we went to the Flat Rock Speedway for our 2nd Michigan race of the year. The day started good setting some of the fastest times in practice. I started 4th in my heat race and teammate Rick McColl started 1st. I got a good start and threaded the needle going into turn one taking the lead. Mean wile Rick McColl (#186) held off the number 23 car making it a one two finish for Menlen Motorsports. The inversion was an “o” sending me back to the 12 position. As we were lining up for the feature a transformer blew up causing the lights to go out. The race was then shortened to 20 laps rather then 30. I would make my way through the filed on the out side finishing up in 5th. Rick would finish in 8th. I would like to thank every one for coming and our next race in May 18th at Kil-Kare.

Frank “The Shark” Jiovani took home his second career Auto Value/Bumper to Bumper Michigan Legends series feature win this past Saturday night at the Flat Rock Speedway. Jiovani bested 21 drivers on this cold night of racing.

The day started out sunny and warm as the drivers showed up at the speedway for some great racing action on this tight quarter mile bull-ring. Four heat races were run to begin the night’s racing action.

The first heat saw Howell, Michigan’s Tom Lovern in the #34 machine lead from the drop of the green. Lovern was pressured all the way by teammate Jerry Warden in the #22. While all this was going on Levi Rouster in the #28 was working on Warden and the #54 of veteran Rick Kilbourn was working his way up from the rear of the field. Kilbourn stayed on the high side and on the last corner of the last lap, Kilbourn got a great run coming off the corner to just nip Lovern for the win at the line. It was a photo finish for second with Lovern holding off Warden for the spot.

The second heat saw Macomb Township Michigan driver Scott Menlen in the #86 take the win followed by Rick McColl in the Menlen Racing #186 and Frank Jiovani in the #23 machine. Jiovani and McColl went at it lap after lap for the runner up spot but McColl was able to hold off young Jiovani at the line by mere inches.

The third heat saw Livonia, Michigan native Ryan Meldrum in the #17 hold off a challenge by Howell driver Ben Rouster in the #21. Rouster tried to mount a challenge but Meldrum was just that little bit quicker in this race. Mussey, Michigan driver Randy Gallagher Sr. took third in the #24 machine.

Chance Rice, driver of the #38 out of Charlotte, Michigan took his first win in a legends car by taking the fourth heat over Tony Monge in the sharp looking #92. Rice and Matt Todd in the #8 battled for the lead until the last lap when Todd got a touch sideways and then looped his machine before recovering for third spot behind Monge.

21 cars took the green flag for the main event of the evening with Gallagher Sr. leading from the green flag with steady pressure from Jerry Warden. On lap 8, eventual winner Jiovani drove around the high side to take the lead pulling Meldrum along with him. Jiovani and Meldrum would battle to the end but Meldrum just couldn’t get it done this night as Jiovani was flat flying and had the #23, Grand Slam Charters machine hooked up. There was great green flag racing through out the pack with dogfights right down to the checkers with no cautions in the event.

Jerry Warden took third followed by Ben Rouster and Scott Menlen rounding out the top five. Levi Rouster, Randy Gallagher Sr., Rick McColl, Dr. Ron “Big Dog" Semlow in the 911, and Rick Kilbourn rounded out positions 6 through 10.

This is the second career feature win for Jiovani, who is a student at Lanse Creuse High School and makes his home in Harrison Township, Michigan. Jiovani has been racing in the Auto Value/Bumper to Bumper Michigan Legends Series for 3 years with this being his fourth in this ultra competitive series.

Next up for the Legends Series is Saturday night; May 26 at the 3/8 mile high banked Kalamazoo Speedway. Check out the Legends website at www.michiganlegends.com and we’ll see you at the races.

Last weekend was our first Michigan race of the season. The race was held at my favorite track, Auto city speedway. I have been going there since I was 5 years old. Practice went well for both Rick and I turning some of the fastest laps of the night. We received a little rain before the races started but the speedway officials dried the track and we were racing. Twenty four cars showed up for the season opener, therefore all would start. I started the heat race on the out side of Skip Krassa right on the front row. I took the lead on the first lap and held on to win my first heat race of the year. Unfortunately the rains came shortly after washing our feature out putting me as the new Michigan Legends points leader for the first time.
It was nice to see Larry Loynes and Rusty Daggett again and don’t forget our next race is Saturday May 12 at the Flat Rock Speedway.

This weekend we set off for Indiana for the first time this year. Our first stop was the Sportsdrome Speedway, a place where we’ve never been before. Practice went well for us and we were hoping it would be the same for the heat race. Unfortunately, it wasn’t. My teammate, Rick McColl, got in an altercation going 3 wide on the first lap. I would end up finishing 5th. That put 15th on the grid for the 25 lapper. I got turned in the opening laps presenting me a new challenge for the night. After several caution flags I made it up to the top 15. With 3 laps to go, during a tight battle, I got air born off the rumble strips causing me to spin to the infield, where I would remain for the rest of the race.
On Saturday morning, we changed the gear in the cars and set off to the Indianapolis Speedrome. It was my favorite type of track, a tight 1/5 mile bullring. Practice went well for us and so did qualifying where I scored my third pole of the year. 31 cars tried to qualify and only ten were locked in from qualifying. The fast heat consisted of the top ten qualifiers and all cars would be inverted, which meant I started tenth. I started the 35 lap feature 9th. Would pick off a few cars and was able to hold on to the 7th position, which is where I would end up. Rick would come home with another top 15 finish.
Also I’d like to thank Randy and AJ for their help this weekend and we look forward to starting our Michigan season this Saturday at Auto City Speedway.

We’re back from our third trip to Kentucky. Saturday was the Easter Bunny Twin Twenties. We qualified 2nd. I ran second for the first 20 laps then the #24 car drew a 0 for the inversion. I started the second 20 laps second and would remain there for the rest of the race, right on Parker Hammons (#24) bumper. The race was shortened to 30 laps due to all the cautions. The car was hooked up both days and on Sunday we qualified on the pole. I once again finished second, this time in the heat race. We started the race 3rd and I moved to 2nd right off the start. Seven laps in, I took the lead and lead until the 17th (of 20) lap. The #63 car gave me the bumper and took the lead. In turn four of the last lap, I returned the favor doing the same thing setting up a drag race down the front straight away. I came up short by inches taking the second second of the weekend. All an all it was a successful weekend and we hope to carry the momentum in to our Michigan season opener on April 28 at Auto City Speedway (Flint).

It’s Monday March 26. We have just returned from our second weekend trip150"" to Kentucky Speedway. Saturday got off to a shaky start fighting a tight race car. We would qualify 9th starting me 5th in the heat race. It came down to the last lap before I could steal the 4th position. I started the feature 7th and moved up quickly. I would spend most of my time in second place before a late race caution came out. During the caution flag my tires got cold which caused them to spin on the restart. I fell back to fourth where I had a tight battle with #12 passing each other several times, but when the checkers fell I was ahead finishing 3rd. Sunday was a different story and the bad luck continued. The day started good having the fastest time in practice and qualifying 2nd. After just a quarter of the race, I was in 3rd place and something seemed to break coming into turn one. At the same time the yellow came out for a spin in turn 3 and 4. Under the yellow, I got an official to take a look at the car: he didn’t find anything. So, I restarted the race but I pulled off right away. In the pits, we discovered it was a broken axle which gave me my second career DNF.

Well it’s Monday morning and we made it home safely 150"" from the demanding weekend. We left on Friday night after a job well done by the crew to get my new Lajoie seat in the car. After a good night sleep at the Ramada Inn we were at the track before the gates even opened. We were so excited to get the season underway. In practice I was collected in a minor incident crushing the front bumper. Fortunately, we were able to get it repaired for qualifying where I scored my first career legends car pole. The race was scheduled to be 25 laps but was shortened to 20 due to two red flags and several cautions, fortunately all the drivers were ok. This did not help me since the car was set up for the long runs. I was able to hang in there for a 5th place finish. When we got back to the hotel, granny made a great meal for us. Sunday was not as successful for me, having a loose race car became a mystery on why. I made it three laps into the race and we discovered why: an axel housing broke, sending me off turn two and into the grass. It was the first time in my 5 years of racing I failed to finish the race. My teammate Rick McColl had a great run. Thanks for the help this weekend Aunt Sandie and Uncle Bernie.

I saw Scott Menlen’s new website and it looks great. Looks like they are going to be very busy this summer with the legend car and hopefully a few runs in the ASA Late Model Series. Speaking of the Menlen’s, I’ve got to thank Jeff for the invite Daytona weekend. It was a great party, good seeing the whole family and friends and all the racing gear on display.

The Auto Value/Bumper to Bumper Michigan legends series made it two nights in a row this past weekend with the first night of racing taking place at the Dixie Motor Speedway in Birch run on Friday.

Three heat races were run for the Legends Cars and there was some exciting, action packed racing in all three heats. In the first heat there was a 2 car tangle on the back stretch before the first lap was completed. The field reformed for a complete restart minus one car. Ryan Meldrum led from the drop of the green but Texan Gene Conley dogged his every move. If Meldrum had slipped just a little bit Conley would have had him. In the end though, Meldrum held on to win over Conley and Tom Lovern. The second heat saw some very tight racing between Rick Kilbourn, Billy Simmons, and Jerry Warden. The trio of cars fought hard for the runner up spot as Ben Rouster had led from the green and pulled out to a sizable lead. At the end of the heat though Rouster took top honors over Rick Kilbourn and Billy Simmons.

The third heat also saw a complete restart as two cars tangled on the backstretch of the opening lap with one car retiring to the pits. Barry Hartwell Jr. led from the restart but Levi Rouster was in hot pursuit and finally wrestled the lead away from Hartwell on the 4th lap and held on for the win over Hartwell and Randy Gallagher Sr.

The Michigan Bandelero Series was also in action and Scott Menlen took the heat and the feature for that division over the Dunsmore brothers Jake and Zach. Menlen is also a rookie in the Legends series as well.

The feature race for the Legends was a real barnburner with action through the entire racing pack. Skip Krassa led from the pole to lap 4 when Gallagher Sr. got around him to lead lap 5. Billy Simmons took the lead at lap 6 while Gene Conley was working his way through the pack and was catching Simmons. A good battle ensued between Simmons and Conley with Billy able to hold off the charge. A mid race caution for a harmless one car spin put Conley on Simmons bumper. On the restart Conley was able to get by Simmons along with Levi Rouster a few laps later. Two more short cautions would keep he field bunched up but in the end Conley took top prize back to Texas with him. Levi Rouster, Billy Simmons, Ryan Meldrum, and Ben Rouster rounded out the top five while Jerry Warden, Rick Kilbourn, Barry Hartwell Jr., Randy Gallagher Sr., and skip Krassa finished in the top ten.

The series moved on to the Flat Rock Speedway on Saturday night with a filed of 25 cars. Four heat races were run with Rick Kilbourn winning heat #1 over Ben Rouster and Frank Jiovani. Heat race #2 saw Billy Simmons take the win over Levi Rouster and Scott Bross. The third heat saw veteran Super Late Model Driver Stan Yee Jr. win over Ken Martin and Scott Menlen. Heat race #4 was taken by Ryan Meldrum over David Beatty and Tom Lovern.
All 25 cars started the 25 lap main event which was halted early in the race for an 8 car stack-up. A couple of cars were not able to continue but the field re-aligned itself and kept on going. In the end though, Ben Rouster was able to win his third feature of the year over Brother Levi. Ryan Meldrum, Billy Simmons, and Barry Hartwell Jr. rounded out the top five. 6th through tenth were Stan Yee Jr., Scott Menlen, Dr. Ron Semlow, Ken Martin, and the returning Gene Clark.

All in all it was a great weekend of action packed racing for the Auto Value/Bumper to Bumper Michigan Legends Series and the Michigan Bandelero Series.
